The Monastery is embarking on Phase 6 restoration in 2007. This involves restoration and reconstruction of the Preaching Hall and back areas of the monastery. The project is managed by a panel of experts and based on UNESCO World Heritage restoration guidelines to maintain a delicate balance between restoration and preservation of a monument.
Phase 6 restoration proposal has been submitted to the Urban Renewal Authority of Singapore (URA). As a gazetted national monument, restoration works must be approved by the URA. The restoration is expected to cost S$13 million and the Monastery has to raise 100% of this amount. (S$13 million is about US$7.6 million, 4.3 million pounds, 6.5 million Euro)
Significance of the
restoration Time and history has left an imprint on the material culture of the monastery. The restoration project is more than rebuilding of a physical structure but an effort to protect and preserve the collective social memory of a society that is in turned shaped by global history.
The participation of sponsors and photographers of different nationalities and ethnicities represents an international effort to preserve an institution that is part of the global cultural landscape. At the same time, it demonstrates how people from diverse backgrounds can come together to celebrate collective human heritage while respecting different ways of seeing and being.
