The Story of Cultural Compass Understanding a culture is like acquiring a compass. It allows us to navigate cultural systems to understand beliefs, lifestyles and different ways of seeing and being. We gain insight and perspective into what may initially come across as ¡°exotic¡±, ¡°strange¡±, ¡°confusing¡±¡ This understanding helps us to appreciate cultural diversity from a holistic perspective; cultural and religious practices are best understood relative to the particular cultures in which they are found. All cultural and belief systems are equally important, deserve respect and best evaluated in their own right. Cultural Compass hopes to promote cultural understanding and interaction among people of different nationality and ethnicity. Volunteers operate the project and contributions used for charity project that reach out to people regardless of race or religion. Symbolism of Cultural Compass logo
The
ancient Chinese believed the universe is round and the earth is a square.
¡¡ The Cultural Compass logo uses this graphic with the 4 compass points in different languages. ¡¡ Russian for North, Chinese for East, English for West and Arabic for South. ¡¡ Different languages have different names for compass points but they refer to the same concept. None of the description is more accurate or more scientific, just different cultural ways of referring and naming the same compass points. Just as in cultural and belief systems, different systems represent different ways of seeing and being. All cultural and belief systems are equally important, deserve respect and best evaluated in their own right. All it takes is an open mind and a desire to understand. |
