Sharing the moonlight
On
the 15th day of the 8th lunar month (农历八月十五), Chinese celebrate the Mid Autumn
festival (中秋节). Mid Autumn festival celebrates union of
the family and togetherness. Family members gather for reunion dinner, admire
the moon and to catch up with each other's lives.
However, in any society, there will be individuals
who might not have people to celebrate these events with. Every year Cultural
Compass orders Shuang Lin Monastery's fund raising moon cake for volunteer
organization to distribute to homes for the elders.
The moon cakes are
delivered to the homes and individuals by volunteers and social workers.
It is a way of saying whoever you are,
what ever is happening to you, you are a beloved and important part of the society. Important enough for
us to want to share the special occasion with.
The partner institutions respect the
cultural diversity of people they care for, transcending issues of ethnicity and
religion.
