Although categorized as a "place of worship", the monastery plays a larger social, historical and cultural role than its classification suggests. It was often a platform where events of historical importance unfolded.  These events reflected the larger social dynamics of a particular time period and the ways in which the monastery is related and embedded in the social web.

Spectre over Shuang Lin

In the 1930s, overseas Chinese in South East Asia participated actively in support of China during the Sino Japanese War. The Abbot of Shuang Lin monastery supported these efforts and had allowed Burma road volunteers to train on monastery grounds.

 

During the Japanese Occupation, the Venerable was arrested by the Japanese and executed during the Sook Ching.

Imperial Tutor and the Shuang Lin Monastery

The Shuang Lin Monastery has a couplet composed specially for the monastery by Mr. Chen Bao Shen who was the Imperial Tutor to Puyi, the last Emperor of China. This articles traces the link between the monastery and Mr. Chen Bao Shen and shows the relationship between China and Overseas Chinese in South East Asia.
